World's Finest #23Written by Mark Waid Art by Dan Mora Summary: The World's Finest of Two Worlds finally come together to take down Gog before he leads heroes of Kingdom Come to their deaths.
Plot: Waid really continues to fire on all cylinders here as he continues his re-visitation of Kingdom Come. I initially thought it was a mistake to go back to Gog and Magog as I thought there just wasn't a way to go back home as it were and any addition to the myth would fall far short of the original but Waid really defied the odds and I've loved every panel of this book and the conclusion next month with Darkseid looks to be even better. The action is amazing, and I love the character moments that Waid peppers in as well. "Superman doesn't lie" was just such a perfect moment for Batman as he tries to convince David to change his ways, it not only encapsulated what is great about the Man of Steel but showed us how much Batman trusts his friend as well which was really fantastic.
Art: Not to knock Alex Ross, but I think Mora might just bring us into the world of Kingdom Come like we never have before with his art. There's a real sense of action, drama and motion to the page that was never there previously and it all looks so fun.
Grade:10/10

Superman #10Written by Joshua Williams Art by Bruno Redondo Summary: In the Wild West of Metropolis the Man of Steel and Marilyn Moonlight take down Terraman in order to get back home.
Plot: Joshua Williams gives us the Superman story we never knew we needed by giving us Superman in a white ten gallon hat taking down bad guys in the Wild West. The only negative to this whole issue is that it's only one issue! After reading this I just want more Superman as a cowboy stories which is never something that's ever crossed my mind before but now that I've seen it I just can't stop thinking about just how perfect it fits. And on top of that I still can't believe this is the same guy who wrote the dreck that was Dark Crisis, Superman continues to be so much fun each and every issue while his previous stories were just so incredibly bad. This is seriously the best Superman has been in decades and I can't wait to see where it goes next.
Art: More than anything else about Redondo's amazing art what I loved the most was his design for cow boy Superman. The white cowboy hat, the blue jeans with red cow boy boots and the red poncho so screamed Superman while at the same time fitting the period perfectly and it somehow still looked clean even in action. It was just a real amazing sight to behold and just instantly became my favorite alternate Superman outfit.

After a terribly paced start Justice League Vs. Godzilla and King Kong is finally delivering on the fun Saturday morning cartoon action the concept promised. The mystery behind what is driving the monsters is compelling enough and the larger than life monster brawls are as fun as you'd expect. It's not exactly Shakespearean drama but it's worth the price of admission.

Steve Orlando's Spider-Man 2099 continues in a similar vein as JL V Godzilla in that it's not a very deep or character driven story but it's tour of Marvel's monster characters in the 2099 world is still proving to be a fun romp.

Steve Orlando's Spider-Man 2099 continues in a similar vein as JL V Godzilla in that it's not a very deep or character driven story but it's tour of Marvel's monster characters in the 2099 world is still proving to be a fun romp. I actually enjoyed these alot more than I thought I would... I really liked the backstory for Dracula (I kinda want to read that story now!)... it feels like that could totally come out of the current MU, too. Miguel seemed a bit invincible in the fights, which was kinda odd but discarding that that were pretty fun stories and I'm really happy to see 2099 getting a bit of love again. |
