E3 cancelled. NBA season suspended. Europe travel to USA banned for 30 days. Tom Hanks infected. Maybe this will be a wake up call to Americans about the virus.
Also, the capitalism-based medical system in USA is going to be problematic.

I honestly thought this was a joke at first.

I am a physician. This virus is no joke. It's human nature to want to keep acting the same way you have already been acting. But this virus is going to be in the history books. It is more contagious than influenza, and more deadly as well. Hospitals in Northern Italy are at 200% capacity, and patients are dying in the halls because of lack of medical staff. This can be avoided in the USA if people stay home as much as possible. That's why schools and professional sports and conventions are shutting down. It is not an over-reaction, even if you can't currently see the reason why in your own neighborhood. Trust the math and the health care officials, because your own experience now is a poor predictor of what your life will be like in two weeks if we don't act now.

I've long suspected that I'm a complete asshole at heart, but all the corona virus news has confirmed it as with every news piece I hear I find myself thinking more and more like this:

Take precautions. Wash your hands frequently. Keep your hands off your face. Stay home as much as possible. Shouldn't be hard for comic book fans to do that part.

So far only 7 acknowledged cases of COVID-19 here in Arizona. All mild cases and either under home quarantine or in hospitals. With all the Corona Virus craziness going on I tried to help with suggestions to my Director. I want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. I asked if I could take a 2 month isolation process and just stay home to be safe. I have the PTO accrual for it and imagine all the movies, books and comics I could enjoy! Of course my request was denied, so I tried a different tact and asked if work would provide a computer and internet set up at home so I would work from home instead of risking infection. I got a no for that as well, even when I explained the cost of a laptop and internet was a lot less than my hospitalization if I were to become infected. Will treat em right if I end up contracting COVID-19.
I tell ya folks, try to help and you just get shot down.

Yeah, my employer is already setup for working from home. We generally have certain days per individual to keep a rotation so there is presence in the office, but I'm just not bothering going in at all this week and likely until this blows over. There is basically no part of my job that requires I be in a particular location 99.9% of the time, so I am riding this one out.

I work from home MWF already, and on the days I do go to my plant, I sit in a building by myself except for a 15-minute meeting in the morning. I'm not terribly concerned about the folks I see in that meeting, and if I wanted to work remote everyday, I would just stay home and no ome would likely say a word about it.
My wife works remotely on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Her employer, which is the largest healthcare provider in the area, is making plans for its staff to increase their time at home. She thinks it will either come down tomorrow or next Friday that all staff that can work remotely 100% will be told to do so.

Natural Selection is making sure that videogame addicts now have a selective advantage!!! But even if their survival rate is increased... will they breed?

Things are getting a little scary in my neck of the woods with the virus. I work from home, but my wife works in Cambridge, MA, which is the epicenter of the outbreak here. In the last couple of days the number of confirmed cases here has jumped from 42 to 95 and counting. 77 of these are related to a business conference by a Cambridge company - attendees of this conference have also spread the virus to four other states and parts of Europe. We had a case at the hospital a mile and a half from our house, and roughly half the cases in the state are in our county. Just today my wife was able to successfully request that she work from home for the forseeable future - we've been waiting for her employer to make the call but since they were dragging their feet she decided to initiate it.
We also had someone in my wife's extended social network die from the virus - close enough that my wife is definitely shaken. Her friend's boyfriend had his mother pass away from the virus, and his father is gravely sick with it as well, with other family members possibly affected.
We've stated stocking up on certain supplies and this weekend I think I'll be making a run to the warehouse store to stock up on essentials. A few days ago I would have said this panic is mostly overblown, but the events of the last couple of days definitely have me anxious. Massachusetts has declared a state of emergency, and the feeling among the people in my area is that there's a real chance we'll be looking at an Italy-style state-wide quarantine within the next few weeks.
Here's very much hoping I'm wrong.

Minor in the scheme of things, but the quarterly comic con I usually attend scheduled for the last weekend of this month was cancelled today in the wake of the governor's request yesterday to cancel/postpone any gatherings of over 250 people.
It's just part of a wave of events in the Dayton area that have been cancelled or altered (no crowds in attendance at the First Four Games of the NCAA tourney for example) that are going to have a major economic impact on the region for a long time to come even if the spread of the virus is mitigated (which is of more importance to be sure) that will affect the lives of a lot of people moving forward even if they remain healthy and avoid infection. In history there are a lot of unforeseen and unintended consequences of actions/events that shape things for a long time afterwards, and I firmly believe the full impact of this outbreak and its aftermath won't be seen for at least 4-5 years afterwards if not longer.

Spain's first death was on March 2nd, today alone they had 31 deaths. Ouch.
Anyway, I think the USA is going to feel the surge in reports the next two weeks. That is what people are going to go nuts in the stores as the fear mongering mounts. Right now, the USA is handling the situation like ass. At least from the top down. The people in power that can actually do something about this, are just using the situation as a political card to play for themselves.
Meanwhile Taiwan and Singapore have pretty much showed the planet how to get in front of the disease and not treat it like a joke.

Meanwhile Taiwan and Singapore have pretty much showed the planet how to get in front of the disease and not treat it like a joke. I don't disagree that the so-called administration is starting to see its miserable life flashing before its eyes, but to compare what we could/ can do here with what Singapore has done is misleading. Like saying that we should model our foreign policy on Switzerland's. Ain't gonna work. But of course, there is plenty that the Current Occupant and his gang of phonies, grifters, mountebanks and shape-shifters should have/ could have and still can do. Since the ominous descent down the escalator, Minimus Dinkimus Merdius has been getting by bellowing "Are you not entertained?' to the own-the-libs mob at all his crypto-Nuremberg rallies. They had their fun while their TV con man/ gangster played made-up-crisis-of-the-day. Well now Dear Leader's been hit upside his spackled face with a crisis he can't just distract everyone from with a hare-brained vicious tweet. Cue Nero and the fiddle.

Still no cases in Idaho. There is something to be said about isolation.
