Went back to the library to get the Weird Love Volume 2 hardcover collection and still it was not on the shelves. Ask the librarian again and was informed that 4 copies were still sitting in the basement after 2 weeks awaiting processing. But this time, there was a spare person on duty to go down and fish out a copy for me. So here I have a virgin copy of the book, ready to break it open and ravish its creamy smooth pages while stroking its cover and rear, fingering the spine and....

When you read the book, let us know what you think.

Been a little busy with some life things here, both very bad and very good. Luckily, the good thing is a little true life romance. For valentine's day, I made this card for my girlfriend; one of our first dates was in costume to the big sci-fi convention here, Arisia: Not sure you can really tell at this level of detail, but everyone in the crowd in the background is either Deadpool or Harley Quinn. The card is an homage to a personal favorite, Girls' Romances #158:

Started reading Weird Love Volume 2. Lets peak under its cover and see what we can find
Part 1
Starts off with an informative intro from romance comic book expert Michelle Nolan who probably has the largest collection of this genre. It seem's Craig Yoe's Weird Love is an irregularly published periodical and Volume 2 collects issues #4-6. Michelle estimates that 6,000 news stand romance books came out between 1947 and 1977. Charlton and DC are responsible for close to 60% of them. She agrees that most are vapid and tripe but to find the real funky gems, ah that's what the collecting and these volumes are all about
Then a few pages of nice looking various covers
Too Fat To Frug 1967 Charlton Writer-Gary Freidrich A go-go dancer falls for the lead singer of a rock band but he jilts her for a girl with a French accent. So the go-go dancer drowns her sorrow in ice cream and cake. She loses her dancing job when she can't fit into the dancing cage. She goes to a doctor for a cure. There is nothing the doctor can do because dieting hasn't been invented yet. Go-Go dancer meets fat slob and they live happily ever after
Men You Shouldn't Marry-1 page cautionary PSA about not marrying gamblers, drinkers, flirters and men who try out your bra when youe not watching
I Was A Border Racket Girl 1952 Fawcett Art-Bob Powell Amy follows her friends example of finding rich men in Mexico who will pay American women big bucks for a quickie marriage to gain entry into the states. But Amy has second thoughts when she begins to fall for one of the foreigners. We get a quick look at her marriage license and learn her last name is Trump. Could it be?
Two-Faced Woman 1962 ACG Art-Pete Costanza Veronica Lee is ugly, shy, has no friends and is in love with a handsome writer. In desperatuion she gets plastic surgery performed with half the money she saved so she could be beautiful. But she finds out the writer is into ugly women. So Amy has to spend the rest of her life savings for another plastic surgery operation. The writer will kiss her now but Amy can only afford dog food for the rest of her life
Love Dancing 1973 Charlton 1 page, 5 panels of a couple kissing. Really
Flirtation On Wheels 1953 St John Art-Ric Estrada Pam is a trailer park girl moving from town to town. She meets a nice boy and lies to him that she lives with a rich old lady in the ritzy section. She doesn't know that the boy is the real grandchild of the rich old lady. Pam is officially trailer park trash
A Monster's Kisses 1968 Charlton Art-Vince Colletta Mrs Clarke just got married but has second thought right after the honeymoon night when her new husband doesn't shave. No matter how bratty she acts, he doesn't shave. Finally after 3 days he shaves and explains to her he has a skin condition and the doctor told him he shouldn't shave everyday. Mrs. Clarke can live with that. Now she complains that he looks like someone drawn by Vince Colletta
I Was Too Beautiful 1952 Comic Magazine Art-John Forte All her life Carol bemoans the fact she's beautiful and girls are jealous and guys won't ask her out because her beauty intimidates them. She helps a young doctor all through the night when a hurricane hits the seaside resort. Her hair gets messed up, there's a dirt smudge on her face and her clothes are wrinkly. The doctor thinks she's cute. This is what Carol has waited for her whole life
Don't these tales sound wonderful? I'll be back with more in a few days. Until then....

Put your Saturday night clothes on and freshen up because you have a date with

These kids are so wild that one of them keeps saying Yuk Yuk. Marsha's girlfriend is part of the gang and drinks so much that she winds up in an insane asylum. That doesn't scare Marsha. What does scare Marsha is when the Yuk Yuk boy tries to kiss her too hard. Her old boyfriend comes to the rescue, the police get involved, Marsha's father is reprimanded for not controlling her and all is well. Marsha warns the readers to stay away from teenage gangs. You bet Marsha
Mail-Order Marriage 1962 ACG Art-Ogden Whitney Clara the country girl wants a rich, big city guy so she puts a classified ad in a magazine. Her dreamboat drives to her home and sweeps her off her feet. But he drinks alot. And he keeps changing his name. And he's got a gun. And the artist who drew this also drew Herbie and it looks real purty

Michelle Nolan's book said that Dana Dutch was the best romance comics writer, period. And I definitely need more Matt Baker in my life.

Part 3-Weird Love The Big Kiss Off
I Was A Waterfront Girl 1950 Comics Magazines Art-Paul Gustavson/Bill Ward It's the island of Tralu and Sal, the dance hall girl is stuck there. A marine biologist arrives (not George Costanza-this is a female marine biologist) and Sal is jealous because she has an interesting job. Sal gets hold of a letter for the biologist while she's out to sea. It's the biologist's rich boyfriend coming to the island to propose. Sal meets the boyfriend and has 254 hours to convince the boyfriend to marry Sal instead and take her away from the island. They smooch a few times but the boyfriend decides to go out to the boat and be with his old marine biologist flame. Sal follows surreptitiously, gets enraged and throws the boyfriend into the shark infested waters. Good stuff
Here's Your...Heart Clinic 1960 ACG Art-Pete Costanza/ Dick Berk The good doctor who narrates this tale claims to be The Mender Of Broken Hearts and has scientifically broken down female love into 6 different phases. He wants the female readers of the comic to mail him their love problems and he will solve them in a few panels. He also promises not to use anyone's real names
I Was A Child Bride 1956 Home Comics Art-Al Avison Lucy is 17 years old and her husband Frank works for Lucy's father. She keeps forgetting to have a hot dinner waiting for Frank when he gets home from work. Frank finally explodes and takes Lucy over his knees for a good spanking. Lucy realizes that Frank really loves her. Its the back end of the book and we finally get a good spanking. What took so long? Lois Lane comics had them every few issues
Isabell's Inventions:The Hand Holder 1962 Charlton Art-Charles Nicholas/Sal Trapani Isabell invents a bracelet that she slaps on her boyfriends wrist that has a hidden mic so she can listen to his conversations and its super-magnetized so she can reel him in, away from pretty girls. I love the panel where Isabel is in a welder's outfit making the bracelet
Stay Away From Married Men 1952 Fawcett Art-Sheldon Moldoff Sally is a pantyhose buyer for a department store and falls for a travelling pantyhose salesman. She gets him a big account at her store and plenty of business with other buyers. But the salesman reveals he's married. To fix his wagon, Sally tells the salesman's boss that she is getting billed for deliveries but never receives the product. The salesman gets fired, is blackballed from the industry and might go to jail for theft. The salesman's wife pleads to Sally for mercy. This is pre-code so anything can happen
Lonely Weekend A one page headscratcher where a nurse stays with a patient. I don't get it
I Married A Monster 1971 Charlton Millie is so happy when her hubby tells her he will be on a TV show regularly. Millie is mortified to find its a kiddie program and he plays Wally The Wolf. For some reason Popeye makes an appearance in the last panel
And that's a wrap. Hope there is more in this series. And not one character named Dick in the whole book. That's truly a Weird Love book

Here it is: I'd bet a monkey against a mousetrap that all five people in this picture other than April O'Day are real celebrities. But GCD only identifies Andy Williams and Alfred Hitchcock. I almost recognize the other man in the picture, but can't quite put my finger on his name. The two women, no idea. The blonde might be Debbie Reynolds. Catching up on some threads... Is the guy in the front with the black hair the one who's been IDed as "Andy Williams"? Well, I guess due to the cragginess /length of the face it might be him...but the black-haired guy and the blonde could be Rock Hudson (a terrible rendering of him, admittedly) and Doris Day, who were a very popular movie team back then. And the brunette almost looks like Valerie Allen, who appeared in their Pillow Talk movie. But she wasn't all that well-known to the general public, so perhaps it's Anne Bancroft.

Just stumbled upon this thread. Could have created another thread, but before I did, I wanted to ask if it was ok if I talked about pre-Silver Age romance on here, as even though the original post focused on Silver Age and beyond, the more recent post about Weird Love and the pre-Silver Age stories gave me the feeling it was ok.
