The Legion and I go way, way back-about a half year or so before Rob Allen picked them up. Somewhere around Adventure # 306. So many of the stories enthralled Little Ishie. The Masked Marauder killing every Legionaire, Lightning Lads death and revival (this is where I learned that women don't have Adam's apples-thanks Lightning Lass), The Fatal Five. The tryouts were cool, the substitute heroes..I could go on and on. I felt that the Legion strip in Adventure Comics had the most consistant high-quality story telling throughout the Silver Age. When the strip moved to Action, the quality began to dip a bit. Little did I know it was one of the signs that the Silver Age was coming to an end. Oh-and that John Forte art. I was fine with it and always felt his characters had the best posture in comics.
I was thrilled when the Legion was revived with Dave Cochran. And I loved the whole Paul Levitz stewardship. But I absolutely detested the 5 years later period. I continued to read them all, being a loyal legion follower but it was such a slog to get through. Confusing stories, didn't know who these characters were, artwork in an endless and boring 9 panel grid. Gibbons on the Watchmen could pull it off but not Giffen because I kept running into panels where I couldn't make out what the hell was going on.
I kept reading all the way till the end-including all the L.E.G.I.O.N. and other spinoffs. Some were good but nothing ever, to me, matched the quality of the original series or the Levitz period
And I did use to own Adventure # 247 before I sold my collection about 4 years ago. Oh well

Here's Adventure Comics #306 that Ish mentioned as among the first Legion comics he ever read. The first thing you notice is that Superboy gets the cover and the Legion is merely mentioned across the bottom. The Legion had been around as occasional guest stars in the Superman books for four or five year at this point, but they had only been given their own feature in Adventure Comics a few issues previously, edging out "Tales of the Bizarro World."

The worst costume in the history of Superheroes. LOOK AT IT: Oh, you sweet innocent thing. You'll see a lot worse before you're done with the Legion.

So how many people here have voted in an LSH election? I'll explain that for the newcomers. The Legion always has a leader, and it's a position they vote on periodically. At times, the readers get to vote! The editors make an announcement on the letters page, the fans vote and a few months latter the editors announce the winner. A lot of the time they include the tally for all the members who got votes! I don't know how far back this tradition goes but they were still doing it in the early 1980s when I was reading it... I believe the reader elections started in 1968, with Ultra Boy the first LSH leader voted in by the readers. It was a fun idea, but the downside was that the less popular characters would fade into the background and never get a chance to shine. I started reading the LSH before the reader elections, when Invisible Kid (Lyle Norg) was the leader. I-Kid as leader was an editorial decision, and during his term he appeared in nearly every issue of Adventure so he got a lot of exposure. Once he ceased being the leader, however, his appearances drastically decreased.

And the LSH is "mentioned" only by inference/association--the actual team being referenced on the cover is the Legion of Substiute Heroes (including a list of its team members). A new reader might get the impression the series is about the Sub. team. Also, note that Polar Boy's mistakenly called "Polar Lad" on the cover (his code name is correct in the story itself). Maybe he was originally going to be called PL at the time the cover was lettered.

Because I know in Teen Titans Wonder Girl is more often than not called "Wonder Chick", so maybe it was intended as a nickname or vice versa?

IMO there's nothing wrong with Cosmic Boy's costume. If Saturn Girl, Projectra, and Shady can wear scanty attire, no reason why C Boy shouldn't Have been able to as well. Frankly I thought Phantom Girl's bell-bottomed costume was ridiculous (for a crimefighter).

Everyone knows that Cosmic Boy's bustier was held up with magnetic nipple rings. That costume is wretched. If it was connected to legged pants, it might not be so bad (still not very functional, but not as bad), but as it turns out, it is connected to speedos/underoos/panties. PANTIES.

Here's Princess Projectra and Shadow Lass in some reader-designed costumes that didn't last very long. This is from Superboy #183, 1972. I didn't know about these costumes until very recently. There's an editor's note on the front page of the story saying that these costumes were shown in Adventure Comics #403 but the story in Superboy #183 is the first time they were worn. I don't know how long they lasted.
